THE DEAD SEA WONDERS
Lying in the heart of the Great Rift some 430 m below sea level, between Israel deserts and hills, the majestic Dead Sea is one of the jewels in the crown of nature. The deep lake has been well known for its healing qualities for thousands of years. Due to a shortage of water supply and over a million years of massive evaporation, the salinity of the Dead Sea gradually increased to the maximal rate of stabilization. The percentage of salt is almost 34% which places the Dead Sea among the four saltiest bodies of water on Earth.
The sea is rich in precious minerals such as potassium, bromide and magnesium – all 3 manufactured by Israeli companies to be marketed around the world. On its shores, broad deposits of the Dead Sea mud, rich with sulfur and many other minerals, are known for their healing and rejuvenating qualities.
The treasures of the Dead Sea were known to men since ancient times. Historians along the millennia describe the routes through which the Dead Sea salt was merchandised to the ancient world. The special asphalt of the sea was uniquely used in the process of mummification. Queen Cleopatra of Egypt convinced Marc Antony to give her this stripe from the province Judea. The ravishing queen was said to use the mud of the sea for preserving her own beauty. The Dead Sea is the lowest point on Earth at 430.5 meters (1412 feet) below sea level. It is a majestic and mysterious looking lake of light turquoise waters with salt crystals jutting out of it, and golden-brown hills surrounding it.

Dead Sea in Biblical times
The Dead Sea is mentioned in the Bible – it was famous even during that period. Several different sects of Jews used to live in the caves near the Dead Sea. The most famous of these were the Essenes, who have left us the original Bible scrolls – but more on them later. The area of Ein Gedi near the Dead Sea, which is a nature reserve today, is believed to be the area where the Biblical David, king to be, hid from King Saul when the latter came after him with the purpose of killing him.
A very well-known Biblical story which took place in the vicinity of the Dead Sea is the story of Lot’s wife. Lot, nephew of Abraham, chose to settle in a stretch of land near the kingdom of Sodom, just north of the Dead Sea. Sodom and neighboring kingdom Gomorrah were notorious for being places of wickedness and vice. Over the years, Lot became a respectable member of Sodom, married a Sodomite and was appointed mayor of the city; his daughters, too, married men of Sodom.  However, God was angry with the people of Sodom, and, wishing to destroy this place of sin, sent Lot two angels to warn him of his plan. Lot and his family planned to flee and were cautioned by the angels not to look back on the city. However, Lot’s wife couldn’t resist and cast back one last look – upon which she was turned into a pillar of salt. To this day, a tall pillar standing near the Mount of Sodom is known as “Lot’s Wife”.
But the salty lake at the lowest elevation on Earth is probably best known for the story of Masada. Masada was a fortress King Herod built on a hill overlooking the Dead Sea, the remains of which can still be seen today. In 70 AD, a group of Jewish zealots fled to Masada following the destruction of the Second Temple. Unfortunately, in 73 AD, the Roman X Legion came after them; but rather than surrender, they collectively decided to commit suicide. Since then, this story has become a symbol of resistance against oppression, and Masada has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Secrets of the Dead Sea Scrolls
Last but not least, a true mystery of the Dead Sea is the Dead Sea Scrolls. As mentioned previously, these scrolls are believed to be had been written by the Essenes. The scrolls are a collection of 981 manuscripts, written between 150 BC and 70 AD, some of which were later included in the Hebrew Bible canon as well as in extra-biblical and deuterocanonical manuscripts.
Where were the Dead Sea Scrolls found? They were discovered in the Qumran Caves, 1.6 km from the Dead Sea, by Bedouin shepherds in 1946-47. In the 1950s the caves were excavated by a team of researchers, and the scrolls have been studied ever since.  Today the scrolls are housed in the Shrine of the Book, an impressive edifice at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
Where is the Dead Sea?

Why is the Dead Sea so salty?
The Dead Sea is famously known for being one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world, and certainly the deepest hyper-saline in the world, at a depth of 304 meters (997 feet). And the reason for this high salinity? The Dead Sea is a terminus for the flow of rain and surface water, which means water flows into it but doesn’t flow out: its water has no escape, but is trapped to evaporate.  Soaring summer temperatures and year-round hot dry climatic conditions make it a perfect place to spend unforgettable holidays yet lead to significant losses of water to evaporation. The water has been losing its H2O content for many years, with the minerals becoming more and more concentrated and salt prominent among them.

How did the Dead Sea get its name?

On top of its chemical virtues, being the lowest point on Earth is one of its greatest advantages concerning sun bathing, the best known treatment for psoriasis. Before reaching the Dead Sea surface, the radiation from the sun has to travel through extra 430 m of air with the highest condensation. The immediate surrounding of the Dead Sea may be dry, but the massive evaporation creates a constant mist that hovers some 200-300 m above the sea, naturally filtering UV and other harmful radiation. This enables safe sun bathing in the numerous solariums around the Dead Sea built especially for this purpose.

Why do people float in the Dead Sea?
Salt is the reason for people’s floating in the Dead Sea, now let us elaborate: the high salt content means that the density of the water is relatively high. When a body in water is denser than the fluid, that body will sink (like a coin in a glass of water). When the density of the body is equal to that of the fluid, the body will be submerged in it but will not sink, however, when the body’s density is lower than that of the fluid, the body will float.
